Do you know about Ottawa’s Singing Nurse?

Barnes Sammon LLP is grateful to this incredible, Ottawa based nurse who is making such a huge difference in her patient’s lives as she brings her guitar with her on her rounds.

“Hi! My name is Amy-Lynn Howson I am a registered nurse and a singer-songwriter Amy-Lynn Howson Music. For many years I have not known if I should prioritize a career in music or in nursing, but recently it has become clear: I can do both, sometimes at the same time! I love helping patients feel seen and understood, and it is truly a privilege to be with them in their most vulnerable moments and to let them know they are not alone. “

“I am employed in Endoscopy at The Ottawa Hospital – L’Hôpital d’Ottawa but currently redeployed to help out in the ICU. With a background in Critical Care from my years in the ICU at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, PEI, I am enjoying being able to use that expertise to support the ICU nurses during this critical time. This has led to an opportunity to bring my guitar to work and I have been able to comfort patients and nurses with some music. I hope it is just the beginning of this new (unofficial) role as a “Singing Nurse”.”

“I see all of my colleagues as change makers. Every single one. From Care Aides to Respiratory Therapists, to Clerks and Physicians. Each one has the capacity to effect change and I see it regularly. The nursing role can be challenging, yet, I see my fellow nurses leading the way as they advocate for their patients and each other to provide quality care. “

What message do you want to share?

“What has come to the forefront for me through the response to the “viral” video that has been shared, is that EACH of us carries something unique and special that can help us care for our patients in ways that extend beyond medicine. From music, to humour, to intentional conversation, to holding a hand, or just being a calm presence in a stressful situation, each and every nurse is more than a medical professional- they are caregivers. SO, let yourself feel free to truly CARE for your patients in the unique way that comes naturally to you- that is what will effect the change that our healthcare needs. “

A standing ovation and massive rounds of applause to this young and brilliant change maker . THANK YOU so very much for everything you are doing.
